What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. 2025 WNBA All-Star Reserves are Set ⭐️

The twelve 2025 WNBA All-Star reserves were announced Sunday, rounding out the full roster for the July 19 game in Indiana. (WNBA)

A few standout notes:

  • Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young are All-Stars for the 4th straight year

  • Kayla Thornton becomes the first-ever All-Star from the Valkyries

  • Three rookies—Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron, and Kiki Iriafen—were selected, a first since 2011

WHY IT MATTERS: The All-Star reserves were selected by the league’s 13 coaches. Captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will draft teams on Tuesday, July 8, selecting from the full list of starters and reserves.

Cheryl Reeve (Lynx) will coach Team Clark, and Sandy Brondello (Liberty) will lead Team Collier—thanks to their team’s league-best records.

2. Team USA Wins 2025 AmeriCup Championship 🏆

Team USA is back on top in the Americas. The U.S. defeated Brazil 92–84 to win the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup gold medal, its first since 2021. Mikayla Blakes, who plays in college at Vanderbilt, led the way with 27 points and was named tournament MVP. (USA Basketball)

WHY IT MATTERS: The AmeriCup is the top tournament for women’s national teams in the Americas—and Brazil came in as the favorite. They were the defending champs, led by two WNBA stars: Kamilla Cardoso and Damiris Dantas.

After trailing by one entering the fourth, Team USA outscored Brazil 27–18 in the final frame to seal the win. With the title, they lock in a spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and also qualify for the World Cup Qualifying Tournaments next March.

The other top five teams—Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, and Puerto Rico—also earn berths to the qualifying tournaments.

3. WNBA Hands Out June Honors 👏

The WNBA announced its monthly awards, and a few familiar names made repeat appearances:

  • Allisha Gray (Dream) and Napheesa Collier (Lynx) were Players of the Month, again.

  • Paige Bueckers (Wings) earned her first Rookie of the Month nod.

  • Natalie Nakase (Valkyries) took home her first-ever Coach of the Month honor.

WHY IT MATTERS: Standing out in the WNBA takes serious consistency and impact. Gray averaged 18.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, leading the Dream to a 6-4 record. Collier dominated with 26.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, with her Lynx going a perfect 6-0. Bueckers was the only player in the league to average at least 20 points and 5 assists in June. And Nakase led the expansion Valkyries to an impressive 7-4 month.
