What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Jonquel Jones Signs With Project B 🖋️

WNBA champion and Finals MVP Jonquel Jones has signed onto Project B, the new international league coming next year. Her announcement comes as WNBA CBA uncertainty continues. (Essentially Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: Jones is now the third major WNBA All-Star to sign on to Project B, joining Alyssa Thomas and Nneka Ogwumike. All three are veterans with nine or more years of experience, and while JJ is the youngest at 31, Project B has yet to announce younger talent. That’s worth watching, since younger players tend to dominate fan interest.

2. Tiffany Hayes Wins WNBA Cares Community Assist Award 🧡

That Ballhalla spirit is still alive. Golden State Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes has been named the 2025 WNBA Cares Community Assist Award winner for her positive impact across the San Francisco Bay Area. (WNBA)

WHY IT MATTERS: This WNBA Cares Community Assist Award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the league’s commitment to giving back. Hayes, despite being in a new city during the Valkyries inaugural season, treated the Bay Area like her home, regularly volunteering and spending her time advancing financial literacy and community empowerment.

3. DIII Scranton Stuns DI Pitt 😲

Point for the underdog. In a rare and impressive upset, Division III Scranton defeated Division I Pitt, 67–63, in a preseason matchup last weekend. (D3 Hoops)

WHY IT MATTERS: DIII programs typically operate with significantly smaller recruiting budgets and fewer physical advantages, but Scranton’s upset shows just how wide and talented the women’s basketball landscape truly is. The Lady Royals have won their conference 10 years in a row and have made back-to-back trips to the DIII Elite 8. (As two former DIII hoopers ourselves, we couldn’t be more thrilled to see this underdog come out on top!)
