What To Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. Brittney Griner Inducted into Texas Sports Hall of Fame 🎖️
Brittney Griner has added another honor to her dominant career—induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. The WNBA and Baylor legend was a McDonald’s All-American at Nimitz High School in Houston before becoming a three-time All-American and 2012 National Champion at Baylor. She went on to win a WNBA title with the Phoenix Mercury in 2014. Now a 10-time WNBA All-Star, Griner is set to enter her 12th season as the newest member of the Atlanta Dream. (KWTX)
WHY IT MATTERS: Griner’s induction cements her place among Texas sports legends, joining women’s basketball greats like Sheryl Swoopes and Teresa Weatherspoon. While the Texas Sports Hall of Fame has over 400 inductees, fewer than 25% are women.

2. Connecticut Sun Deny Marina Mabrey’s Trade Request 🚫
Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey requested a trade earlier this month, but on Tuesday, the team announced they had declined her request. Mabrey’s agent quickly criticized the decision publicly, fueling speculation about tensions between the player and the organization. (ESPN)
WHY IT MATTERS: This isn’t the first time Mabrey has sought a trade—she has previously requested moves from multiple teams, most recently the Chicago Sky, who dealt her to Connecticut mid-season last year.
While she hasn’t publicly explained why she wants out after less than a full season with the Sun, the team has undergone major roster shakeups this offseason, losing key starters Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, DiJonai Carrington, and Brionna Jones.
3. Odyssey Sims Enters Athletes Unlimited Record Books đź“š
Odyssey Sims has etched her name in Athletes Unlimited history, setting a new record with 941 leaderboard points in a single game set. In Athletes Unlimited, points are awarded based on overall performance, factoring in stats like scoring, assists, and defensive impact. Sims’ record-breaking night was fueled by a dominant 41-point performance. (Athletes Unlimited)
WHY IT MATTERS: Sims, who recently re-signed with the Los Angeles Sparks, is proving she still has plenty left in the tank. At 5’8”, the 11-year WNBA veteran is competing against increasingly athletic and versatile talent with more size. While her WNBA minutes have declined over the past four seasons, her standout performance in Athletes Unlimited is a reminder of the impact she can make when given the opportunity.
