📆 On this day 29 years ago, the WNBA was born.
On April 24, 1996, the NBA Board of Governors officially approved the formation of the WNBA, launching the iconic “We Got Next” campaign and ushering in a new era of women’s basketball.
What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. Chennedy Carter Named WCBA Player of the Year 🏅
Former Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter has been named the Asia-Basket 2025 WCBA Player of the Year, following a dominant season with Wuhan Shengfan in China’s Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. In addition to the league’s top honor, she also earned Defensive Player of the Year, Guard of the Year, and Import Player of the Year. (Yahoo Sports)
WHY IT MATTERS: Carter’s run in the WCBA served as a powerful reminder of what she can do. She averaged an eye-popping 32 points and 3 steals per game, posted six 40+ point performances, and even dropped 50 in a single outing. Despite her standout season overseas, she remains unsigned for the 2025 WNBA season after the Chicago Sky chose not to extend a qualifying offer.

2. College Women’s Basketball Transfer Portal Now Closed 🚪
The NCAA transfer portal for women’s college basketball officially closed on Wednesday. While graduate transfers can still enter at any time, underclassmen who enter after this point—unless prompted by a head coaching change—will be required to sit out a season or apply for a waiver. (On3)
WHY IT MATTERS: According to the NCAA, there are 5,048 Division I women’s college basketball players—and 1,514 of them (nearly 30%) entered the portal this offseason. So far, only 557 have committed to new schools, leaving nearly 1,000 still seeking a new landing spot. While the portal is now closed to new undergrad entries, there’s no deadline for players already in the portal to commit, meaning we’ll see announcements trickle out in the coming weeks and months as rosters continue to shake out.
