What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Columbia to Celebrate Dawn Staley with New Statue ⭐️

Dawn Staley’s impact on women’s basketball — and on Columbia, South Carolina — will soon be immortalized. The University of South Carolina announced that a statue honoring the legendary Gamecocks coach will be unveiled this Wednesday, April 30. (University of South Carolina)

WHY IT MATTERS: Staley’s legacy runs deep. She’s led South Carolina to three national championships, helped launch dozens of WNBA careers, and poured into the Columbia community through initiatives like the Dawn Staley Champions Fund, which provides scholarships for disadvantaged students. As the University says, her statue will serve “as a lasting symbol of excellence, resilience, and pride for Columbia and the entire state of South Carolina.

2. WNBA Will Offer Free Streaming for Most Preseason Games 📺

Good news for us fans: the WNBA is offering a free preview of League Pass from May 2 through May 12—just in time for preseason action. Fourteen of the 15 preseason games will stream live on League Pass, with the only exception being Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever on May 4, which will air nationally on ESPN.

WHY IT MATTERS: Last year, fans voiced frustration when many preseason games weren’t available to stream. This year, the league listened. By offering nearly the entire preseason, and making it free, the WNBA is ensuring that all fans can watch rookies debut, rosters take shape, and early storylines unfold.

3. Amazon Prime Orders New Diana Taurasi Docuseries 🎬

Amazon Prime Video is producing a new three-part docuseries about the legendary career and life of WNBA icon Diana Taurasi. (Variety)

WHY IT MATTERS: Titled simply Taurasi, the series will feature exclusive interviews with Diana and those closest to her. Following her retirement announcement earlier this year, Prime Video is moving quickly to capture the story of one of basketball’s fiercest competitors.

Brands and media companies are recognizing the growing appetite for WNBA-driven content, and Taurasi’s larger-than-life personality and historic career make her a perfect fit for a behind-the-scenes spotlight.
