What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Georgia Amoore Out Indefinitely with ACL Injury 💔

Just days before her anticipated WNBA debut, No. 6 overall pick Georgia Amoore has suffered a significant setback. The Washington Mystics announced Tuesday that Amoore injured the ACL in her right knee during practice and will be out indefinitely. She’ll begin treatment and rehab with the team’s medical staff. (Washington Mystics)

WHY IT MATTERS: This is heartbreaking news for both Amoore and the Mystics. The former Kentucky and Virginia Tech star—one of just three D-I players ever to tally 2,300 points and 800 assists (alongside Sabrina Ionescu and Caitlin Clark)—was expected to step into a key role in Washington’s rebuild. ESPN projected her as a starting point guard this season. Instead, the team will now lean on fellow Australian Jade Melbourne to take the reins. The Mystics have not announced a timeline for Amoore’s return.

2. Dawn Staley Statue Unveiled in Columbia 👏

The anticipated new statue honoring University of South Carolina Head Coach Dawn Staley was officially unveiled Wednesday near downtown Columbia. The 14-foot bronze sculpture shows Staley atop a ladder, holding up a basketball net.

WHY IT MATTERS: Staley’s impact at South Carolina has certainly been statue-worthy. Over her 17 seasons with the Gamecocks, she’s led the program to three national titles (2017, 2022, 2024), seven Final Fours, and nine SEC tournament championships. Now Columbia is home to two statues of women in basketball: Staley joins Gamecock legend A’ja Wilson, whose statue resides outside of Colonial Life Arena.

3. Top Transfer Serah Williams Commits to UConn đŸș

One of the most coveted players in the transfer portal is headed to Storrs. Former Wisconsin forward Serah Williams announced she’s transferring to UConn for her final season. (Serah Williams on X)

WHY IT MATTERS: Williams is a huge pickup for the defending national champs. The 6'4" forward averaged 19.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, and earned All-Big Ten First Team and All-Defensive Team honors last season. She’s known for her rim protection and interior scoring. Williams chose the Huskies over LSU and UNC, bringing three years of Big Ten experience with her to a championship-caliber roster.
