WHY IT MATTERS: This is a first-of-its-kind tournament for professional women’s basketball players. Players have an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of their peers and fans to prove once and for all who the best of the best is. Along with bragging rights, there’s serious money on the line: 💰 $200,000 grand prize for the champion, $50,000 for the runner-up, $25,000 for the two who reach the semifinals but not the finals, and $10,000 for every teammate of the tournament winner.
2. Nike Puts Women’s Basketball Stars in the Spotlight with Super Bowl Ad 📺
Nike is revamping an old playbook—and this time, women athletes are the stars. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Nike returned to the Super Bowl ad lineup—and this time, the campaign solely focuses on women athletes. The commercial features women’s basketball stars Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, and JuJu Watkins, alongside other elite athletes like gymnast Jordan Chiles, soccer star Sophia Smith, and track sensation Sha’Carri Richardson. (So Win. Nike Super Bowl Commercial)
WHY IT MATTERS: Nike just put women’s sports on the world’s biggest stage, in front of hundreds of millions of viewers. The message is clear: women athletes are good business. By making them the focus of a Super Bowl campaign, Nike clearly recognizes the value of these athletes and is betting big on their influence to help power Nike’s own brand resurgence.
3. Another Game, Another Upset 👀
It’s been a wild week in women’s college basketball. For the second time in less than a week, a top-5 team has fallen. No. 2 South Carolina was beaten by No. 4 Texas on Sunday, 62-66. No. 5 UConn was upset by No. 19 Tennessee on Thursday, 76-80. Both games came down to the wire, with the final score decided by just four points. (CBS Sports)
WHY IT MATTERS: The championship race is wide open. While South Carolina has dominated the SEC for years, this loss marks their first SEC defeat since December 2021. It’s a signal that other programs are catching up and finding ways to win. With the SEC tournament and NCAA Championship on the horizon, the race for the title is more unpredictable than ever.
OVERTIME ⏱️
Lauren Betts is running it back. The 6’7” UCLA star announced that she’ll return for her senior season in 2025-26, passing on this year’s WNBA Draft, where she was projected as a top-five pick. And here’s the twist: She won’t be the only Betts on the floor. Next season, Lauren will suit up alongside her younger sister, Sienna Betts, a 6’4” forward who signed with UCLA in November. 👉 See the Betts sisters
