What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. First Round of March Madness is Here 🔥
The first round of the 2025 Women’s NCAA Tournament tips off today, launching wall-to-wall hoops as 64 teams begin their march toward the national championship. Top seeds UCLA, South Carolina, Texas, and USC lead a wide-open bracket where anything can happen. (CBS Sports)
WHY IT MATTERS: This year’s tournament is as unpredictable as ever. While a No. 1 seed has taken the title 23 times since 1994, this season doesn’t have a runaway favorite. With elite talent spread across the bracket, don’t be surprised if a dark horse makes a deep run.

ION will broadcast the most games across the regular season — 50 in total.
WNBA League Pass will offer 200+ games.
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will be featured prominently with a league-record 41 of their 44 games set for national broadcast. (WNBA)
WHY IT MATTERS: Broadcasters are maximizing this moment in women’s basketball. After a record-setting 2024, this expanded coverage ensure fans have more opportunities than ever to watch the W, and gives new audiences a chance to discover the league.

3. DIII National Championship Tips Off Saturday in Virginia 🏆
The NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship is set for Saturday, March 23 as the No. 1 NYU Violets face the No. 8 Smith Pioneers at 4 PM ET. The game will be held at Roanoke College’s Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia. NYU enters undefeated and looks to defend their national title. (NCAA)
📺 Watch the championship game live at 4 PM ET on ESPN+
WHY IT MATTERS: In an era shaped by NIL and media buzz, DIII basketball remains a powerful expression of pure amateur competition. These student-athletes may not make headlines, but their dedication is just as intense. They balance high-level play with academics, and compete for the love of the game.
OVERTIME ⏱️
Finally, a cut: For the first time, women’s NCAA Tournament teams will receive unit-based payouts—$113K to conferences per game played—just like the men.
Big ad boost: Women’s sports ad spend jumped 2.5x in 2024, hitting $244M. WNBA-led ads? Research proves they’re twice as effective.
Set your alarm: WNBA Draft tickets go on sale TODAY at 10 AM ET. The draft hits NYC on April 14.
