What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. A'ja Wilson Named AP Female Athlete of the Year 👑
A'ja Wilson has been selected as the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year, adding yet another major honor to her already massive 2025. (AP News)
WHY IT MATTERS: The year-end accolades just keep stacking up for Wilson, who’s coming off one of the most dominant stretches we’ve seen from any player. She won her fourth WNBA MVP, shared Defensive Player of the Year, and led the Aces to their third title in four years. After TIME recognized her earlier this week, this AP award leaves no question that A’ja Wilson is on top, top, top.

2. Iowa State Hands Iowa Its First Loss of the Season 🏀
No. 10 Iowa State took the highly anticipated Cy-Hawk matchup on Wednesday night handing No. 11 Iowa its first loss of the season, 74–69, and staying undefeated behind a massive 30-point, 10-rebound performance from star center, and fan favorite, Audi Crooks. (Sports Illustrated)
WHY IT MATTERS: Crooks is becoming one of the must‑watch college players in the country this season. The junior center has now recorded 30+ points in three straight games and owns the longest active streak of double‑digit scoring games (78). This year’s Cy‑Hawk game was set up to be a tight Top‑25 battle, but Crooks’ size and touch proved too much for Iowa to overcome.

3. Aerial Powers Signs With AU for 2026 📣
Aerial Powers will suit up for Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball this winter, her first with the upstart league. (Athletes Unlimited)
WHY IT MATTERS: Powers is a high‑energy player with championship pedigree and a decade of WNBA experience. She is coming off a 2025 campaign split between the Valkyries and Fever, where she averaged 7.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2 assists in 16.7 minutes per game. She’s another strong addition that boosts the profile of this league as a winter home for pro talent.
