What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. Sue Bird Is Still Elevating the Game 🐐

Even in retirement, Sue Bird continues committed to growing women’s basketball. Two big announcements regarding the WNBA legend dropped yesterday:

  • She will be named the managing director of USA Basketball’s Women’s National Team for the 2028 Olympic cycle. Bird will oversee roster selection and coaching staff decisions for both the Olympic and FIBA World Cup teams. (The Athletic)

  • She’s launching a new WNBA podcast, Bird’s Eye View, on May 16 to coincide with the start of the regular season. The show will feature Bird’s insights and conversations with players, coaches, and analysts. (Hollywood Reporter)

WHY IT MATTERS: With four WNBA titles, five Olympic golds, and a Hall of Fame election in April, Sue Bird remains one of the game’s most beloved figures. Since her retirement in 2022, she’s stayed close to the sport, joining the Seattle Storm ownership group and co-hosting the Final Four telecast with Diana Taurasi. Her new roles show just how dedicated she is to furthering the game.

2. Dallas Wings Lock In Maddy Siegrist Through 2026 🪽

Maddy Siegrist will stay with the Dallas Wings for the foreseeable future. The team exercised her fourth-year rookie contract option, keeping her on the roster through at least the 2026 WNBA season. (Dallas Wings)

WHY IT MATTERS: Siegrist is fresh off a breakout sophomore season, averaging 9.4 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting over 50% from the floor. The former No. 3 overall pick made a strong case for Most Improved Player and hasn’t slowed down. Earlier this year, she dominated at Athletes Unlimited, claiming the top individual title by racking up the most points from team wins and standout performances.

3. Fever Preseason Game Draws 1.3M Viewers on ESPN 📺🔥

Sunday’s preseason showdown between the Indiana Fever and Brazil’s national team pulled in 1.3 million viewers on ESPN. It was Caitlin Clark’s highly anticipated return to national TV after more than seven months. (Front Office Sports)

WHY IT MATTERS: Caitlin Clark continues to draw in fans. This marked ESPN’s first-ever nationally televised WNBA preseason game, and it outdrew the network’s average regular season WNBA audience from last year (1.3 million vs. 1.2 million). For reference, only two NBA preseason games have topped that number in the past 14 years.

The game also brought Clark back to Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where she last played in college.

OVERTIME ⏱️

The A’One sold out in under five minutes. A’ja Wilson’s debut Nike signature sneaker flew off shelves when it dropped online Monday morning. After the initial batch disappeared, Wilson shared on Instagram: “This morning was wild—if you missed the A’One, don’t worry. We’re dropping again Thursday at Nike stores and other spots everywhere. I do this for the real ones, always.”
