What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. WNBPA Authorizes Executive Committee to Call a Strike 😳

The WNBPA announced that its members have voted to authorize the union’s executive committee to call a strike if and when it deems necessary. The move gives the committee’s seven active players the authority to initiate a work stoppage as CBA negotiations continue. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: This vote doesn’t mean a strike is imminent, but it does give players more leverage at the bargaining table. The league’s latest proposal includes significant salary increases, with maximum salaries rising above $1.3 million and average salaries topping $530,000 early in the deal. Even so, a major gap remains: players are seeking roughly 30% of gross revenue, while the league’s proposal would grant less than 15% of net revenue. Let’s hope the two parties are able to come together before the January 9 deadline.

2. Joyce Edwards Has Officially Found Another Gear 💎

South Carolina sophomore Joyce Edwards is beginning to look more comfortable and more confident as the season moves along. On Thursday, the Naismith Player of the Year Watch List forward posted a new career high with 34 points on 14-of-15 shooting in just 28 minutes. (Her Hoop Stats)

WHY IT MATTERS: Over her last three games, Edwards has quietly put together a strong stretch, averaging 29.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.7 steals, and 3.0 blocks while shooting nearly 80% from the floor. As South Carolina continues to settle in ahead of SEC play, Edwards’ growth gives the Gamecocks another steady option they can lean on as the competition ramps up.

3. Stewie & Phee Are SI’s Innovators of the Year 🧠

Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier were named Sports Illustrated’s Innovators of the Year, an award recognizing those shaping the future of sports through performance, business, and leadership. (Sports Illustrated)

WHY IT MATTERS: Stewart and Collier helped reshape the business side of women’s basketball by co-founding Unrivaled, a player-owned league designed to give athletes more opportunity and control. Their work reflects a growing shift toward players having a stronger voice in how women’s basketball leagues are built and run.
