What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. USA 3x3 Teams Win Gold at the 2025 FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 🥇

Team USA dominated in León, going a perfect 5–0 behind Shakira Austin, Veronica Burton, Allisha Gray, and Naz Hillmon. They rolled through early rounds and edged Canada 21–19 in a thrilling final, sealed by two clutch free throws from Gray, who also earned tournament MVP honors. (FIBA)

WHY IT MATTERS: The 3×3 AmeriCup has only been around since 2021, and this marks Team USA’s third title. This go-around they controlled nearly every game, outscoring opponents by wide margins before surviving a nail-biter against Canada. It’s a big confidence boost heading into next year’s global competitions.

2. WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement Still in Limbo 🤷‍♀️

Just 30 minutes before the WNBA’s CBA was set to expire Sunday night, the league and the WNBPA agreed to extend it through January 9, 2026, giving both sides another 40 days to keep negotiating. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: The extension is a good sign that talks are ongoing, but it also compresses an already busy league calendar. The expansion draft for the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo can’t happen until a new CBA is in place; last year, the Valkyries’ expansion draft was held in early December. Free agency and the college draft could also get squeezed into a tight two-month window. It’s a pivotal moment for the league, and the next update from either side will shape how the 2026 season comes together.

3. NCAA Proposes Shorter Transfer Windows for Hoops 🔄

This week, DI Basketball Oversight Committees proposed shrinking the transfer notification window from 30 days to just 15 for both men’s and women’s college basketball. For women’s hoops, that would mean April 6–20 for transfer notifications. (ESPN)

WHY IT MATTERS: Players need the freedom to move when a program isn’t the right fit, but the current 30‑day window has made roster planning tough for coaches. A 15‑day window feels like a middle ground: athletes keep mobility, while coaching staffs get quicker clarity on who’s staying and who’s not. The transfer window was once 60 days, and this proposal marks another significant tightening.
