What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today

1. WNBA Proposes New $1.1M Max Salary 💼

The WNBA has put a major number on the table in its latest CBA proposal: a maximum salary of $1.1 million. The offer also includes raising the minimum salary to $220,000 and increasing the league’s average salary to more than $460,000. (AP)

WHY IT MATTERS: This represents a significant step forward in player compensation, one of the biggest priorities for WNBA athletes. Revenue-sharing details, long-considered the biggest sticking point for players, are still unclear. The union hasn’t issued a response yet, but this proposal shows real movement toward a more equitable, competitive pay structure.

2. The 2026 Wooden Award Watchlist Is Out 🏆

The Wooden Award Committee dropped its first watchlist of the season, featuring 50 of the nation’s top players, including Hannah Hidalgo, Lauren Betts, Madison Booker, and Olivia Miles.

WHY IT MATTERS: The Wooden Award is one of college basketball’s most prestigious awards, given to the nation’s top overall player. While the list is early, it’s a clear snapshot of who’s expected to lead the national conversation, and which teams may have deep runs come March. LSU tops the field with five selections on the watchlist, while UCLA, South Carolina, and UConn each landed four.

3. Charlene Curtis Earns the NCAA’s Gerald R. Ford Award 🌟

The NCAA announced that the late Charlene Curtis has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Gerald R. Ford Award, recognizing leadership and advocacy in intercollegiate athletics. (NCAA)

WHY IT MATTERS: Curtis broke barriers her entire career, becoming the first Black woman to play basketball at Radford, as well as the first Black women’s basketball head coach at Temple, and the first in ACC history. She went on to coach at Wake Forest, then supervise ACC women's officials, all while continuing to advocate for the sport until her passing in 2022.
