Good morning! ☕️
What a weekend for women’s basketball. If you missed it, Candace Parker had her Sparks No. 3 jersey retired on Sunday—how lucky we are to have gotten to watch her play. Let’s jump into what’s next…
What to Know About Women’s Basketball Today
1. Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier Named 2025 WNBA All-Star Captains ⭐️
Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier were announced as 2025 WNBA All-Star captains on Sunday after receiving the most fan votes. Clark led with 1,293,526, and Collier followed with 1,176,020. (WNBA Communications)
WHY IT MATTERS: As captains, Clark (East) and Collier (West) will draft this year’s All-Star teams, starting with the remaining eight starters, then selecting from the 12 reserves.
The rest of the All-Star starters will be announced tonight, and the game itself tips off Saturday, July 19 at 8:30 PM ET, hosted in Indianapolis.

2. Belgium Wins Back-to-Back EuroBasket Titles 🤩
In a wild comeback finish, Belgium stunned Spain 67–65 to win their second straight EuroBasket championship. Down 12 with under 3 minutes left, the Belgium Cats closed the game on a 14–0 run. (FIBA Basketball)
WHY IT MATTERS: For Belgium, winning the biennial, 16-team tournament first-and-foremost gives them major bragging rights. EuroBasket is the premier European basketball tournament and it has a long, rich history. Clinching the title cements Belgium’s place as the continent’s top national team.
The win also secures Belgium a spot in the next FIBA Women’s World Cup, which in turn helps qualify teams for the 2028 Olympics.
The WNBA’s Julie Vanloo (Valkyries) and Julie Allemand (Sparks) both suited up for the Cats, and now they’re EuroBasket champs.

3. Sue Bird to Be Honored with Bronze Statue in Seattle 🙌
WNBA legend Sue Bird is getting a bronze statue outside Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, to be unveiled on August 17. It’ll stand beside Lenny Wilkens at the arena’s west plaza. (The Seattle Times)
WHY IT MATTERS: After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in 2002, Bird spent her entire 19-year career with the Storm, leading them to four WNBA titles and racking up a long list of accolades. She is a 13-time All-Star and 8-time All-WNBA selection.
In 2024, the city renamed a street “Sue Bird Court”, and her No. 10 jersey already hangs in the rafters at Climate Pledge. This statue is the next fitting tribute for a player who meant everything to Seattle.
